Colloidal Silver-Sources

I’m fluent in 3 languages and found a lot of information on the subject of Colloidal Silver and its uses. Research of number of doctors, universities, and some historical data. I wanted to share some of it with you and translated some fragments into Japanese.

The amount of data and information presented in English is overwhelming and I’m surprised there is so little quality information and awareness on Japanese WebPages…

Please remember, I’m not a medical doctor, I only share my personal experience and the wisdom of world's authorities on the subject and some historical references.

1. Who was Robert Beck?

No question, the awareness of Colloidal Silver in modern times was awaked by

Dr.Robert Beck, PhD, who was a physicist, holding a PhD in physics from the University of Southern California.

Physicist and a consultant to the Sandia Corp, Senior Staff Scientist at Eyring Research Institute, and consultant to the US Navy.

Researcher and inventor who has been nominated by a Mexican hospital for the Noble Prize for his research in developing aids cure. He believed that he would not receive the prize, which he did not, because he is not a "team player" in the organised health field. Leading Edge Newspaper publishers Kenneth and Dee Burke interviewed Bob Beck at the Global Sciences Congress in Denver, Colorado, where cutting-edge, innovative information continues to be presented year after year.
Dr.Becker cured thousands of people suffering from cancer,aids and other diseases, however his achievements are only known to very few. It is almost shocking how little is known about this modern Genius who went against the expensive, mostly useless forms of treatments like chemotherapy and other...

2. What is Colloidal silver?
Colloidal Silver is a powerful, non-toxic, natural antibiotic that is effective against bacteria, germs, virus and fungi. It is able to protect the human body from various infections and stimulate new cell growth. It can be used orally or topically on the skin, through the rectum, atomised or nebulized into the lungs, nose and eyes without any irritation or side effects!

Colloidal silver (a colloid consisting of silver particles suspended in liquid)

A colloid is a substance microscopically dispersed throughout another substance.[1]

The dispersed-phase particles have a diameter of between approximately 1 and 1000 nanometers.[2] Such particles are normally invisible in an optical microscope, though their presence can be confirmed with the use of an ultramicroscope or an electron microscope.

3. Historical perspective and other references.

Greeks and Romans used silver to store all of their liquids.
In the Americas it was common practice to drop a silver coin into a container of milk to prevent it from spoilage.
French surgeon Dr. Carl Credé (1819-1892) proclaimed the benefits for using silver nitrate to reduce neonatal eye infections. He was one of the first modern surgeons to use silver nitrate to prevent infections.
Dr. William Halsted (1852–1922) was the first Chief Surgeon of the John Hopkins Medical School. Pioneered the use of silver wire for hernia operations and silver foil to prevent infections.
In the 1800s the use of Silver was common medical knowledge.
Early 20th century was a period when silver became primary antibiotic used by medical professionals. Lots of research was done during that period.
Senior Lecturer of the Department of Chemical Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College, London, UK ,stated “Metallic silver and silver compounds are used widely in medical devices and health care products to provide antibacterial and anti fungal action. Experience has shown that they are generally safe in use and effective in controlling pathogenic organisms.”
Jim Powell, Science Digest, March, 1978, "Our Mightiest Germ Fighter", "Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine. An antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some many folds more. Resistant strains fail to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic."
Dr. Harry Margraf of St. Louis "Silver is the best all around germ-fighter we have."
A publication in 1912, by French physician BG DuHamel, gives evidence of extensive applications of colloidal silver in infectious diseases worldwide: “The introduction of the metallic colloids into medicine constitutes a new departure in therapeutics, the significance of which does not appear as yet to be generally recognised Under these circumstances, a brief review of the physical qualities, physiological properties, and therapeutical effects of these remarkable bodies presents a certain practical interest.” After giving a list of infectious diseases treated successfully and safely with colloidal silver, DuHamel wrote: “A glance at the bibliographical notes will show that these remarkable results have not been obtained by any one observer or group of observers, nor in any one country. They are daily being placed on record in medical literature all over the world. In view of their daily increasing field of usefulness, it can hardly be doubted that a new and interesting chapter has been opened up in contemporary therapeutics by the introduction of colloid metals. One point stands out prominently, and that is the absolute innocuousness of these bodies"

In 2005, Morones, reported the results of their experiments with the use of colloidal metallic silver. These investigators studied the effect of silver colloids in the range of 1-100 nm on gram-negative bacteria inoculated on agar plates. Only silver nano-colloids less than 10 nm were able to bind to the bacterial membrane and penetrate inside the bacteria. They reported that these silver nano-crystals were spherical in shape. The overall effect of metallic silver nano-particles was different from the effect of silver ions which acted mainly at the surface of the membrane and triggered a protective mechanism in the bacteria. The metallic silver nano-crystals did not trigger this protective mechanism and were able to penetrate inside the bacteria. To summarise their findings, spherical silver nano-particles in the range of 1-10 nm attach to the surface of the bacterial cell membrane and drastically disturb its proper function, like permeability and respiration. These silver nano-particles are also able to penetrate inside the bacteria and cause further damage by possibly interacting with sulphur and phosphorus containing compounds.

Silver in Ophthalmology, J. Mark Hovell, Colloidal silver has been used successfully in septic conditions of the mouth (including pyorrhoea alveolaris-Rigg's disease), throat (including tonsillitis and quinsies), ear (including Menier's symptoms and closure to Valsava's inflation), and in generalised septicaemia, leucorrhoea, cystitis, whooping-cough, and shingles.
One hundred years ago, DuHamel described the electrolytic preparation of colloidal silver having a brownish-red colour characteristic of colloidal metallic silver (not ionic silver salt which has a milky white appearance). Quoting DuHamel: “The physical method consists in passing the electric arc between electrodes of the metal to be converted into colloid, plunged into distilled water. Under these conditions, the electrodes throw off an extremely fine powder which remains suspended in the liquid. A solution of electric colloid silver (small-grained) is of a brownish-red colour.”
It is likely that the antibacterial effect of metallic silver nano-particles reported by Sondi was due to particle sizes below 10 nm, as reported by Morones, et al.72 A recent study of the effect of silver nano-particles on HIV-1 confirms the 10 nm size limit for effectiveness. Elechiguerra, et al,74 used silver nano-particles with a mean diameter of 21 nm but with a wide range of sizes. They demonstrated that silver nano-particles undergo a size-dependent interaction with HIV-1, with nano-particles exclusively in the range of 1-10 nm binding to the HIV-1 at the exclusion of larger colloidal particles.

Ayurvedic medicine recommends the use of pure silver tongue cleaners and tools for dental maintenance, as well as boiling pure silver in water for prolonged periods of time; after half of the amount evaporated it was recommended to drink the remaining half of the water.
Probably all known civilisations used silver in one way or another to infuse water with health properties.
Today many people find use for Colloidal Silver in cases of influenza, both as a prophylactic and for curative purposes.
Some apply it as a spray to the nostrils and as a gargle for the throat.
The ancient and modern Chinese use silver needles in their acupuncture practice.
Russian Tsars used silver to purify water from rivers and streams to make it drinkable, practice still used by some in parts of Ukraine and South-EastPoland (Bieszczady).
Silver based devices to sterilise recycled water have been used aboard the MIR space station and the NASA space shuttle.
Modern day water purification, Electrolytically-dissolved silver has been used as a water disinfecting agent, for example, the drinking water supplies of the Russian "MIR" orbital station and the International Space station
Many modern hospitals filter hot water through copper-silver filters to defeat MRSA and legionella infections.
The World health organisation includes silver in a colloidal state produced by electrolysis of silver electrodes in water, and colloidal silver in water filters as two of a number of water disinfection methods specified to provide safe drinking water in developing countries.

4. The Antimicrobial effect of Silver

Silver is the most universal antibiotic substance. If delivered in the colloidal form, it is non-toxic.

It is very useful guarding off hundreds of infectious conditions. The theories as of its benefits vary and are not always clear till today; although it is proven antimicrobial effects are no mystery. The widely accepted theory is that silver disables specific enzymes which some bacteria,viruses and fungi use for their metabolism.

5. Mechanism of action

Silver and most silver compounds have an oligodynamic effect and are toxic for bacteria, algae, and fungi in vitro. Among the elements that have this effect, silver is the least toxic for humans. The antibacterial action of silver is dependent on the silver ion.[7] The effectiveness of silver compounds as an antiseptic is based on the ability of the biologically active silver ion (Ag+ ) to irreversibly damage key enzyme systems in the cell membranes of pathogens.[7] The antibacterial action of silver has long been known to be enhanced by the presence of an electric field. Applying an electric current across silver electrodes enhances antibiotic action at the anode, likely due to the release of silver into the bacterial culture.[51] The antibacterial action of electrodes coated with silver nano structures is greatly improved in the presence of an electric field.

6. Using Colloidal Silver to Support your Immune System

Modern sources and research suggests that most pathogenic organisms are killed in the test tube at concentrations of 10–40 ppm, and some requiring concentration of up to 60 ppm

7. Silver has been used by mankind for thousands of years,
and there is a great deal of safety information available on the use of silver both internally and externally.

Most of the available test work on silver has been provided through the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Unlike other heavy metals, silver is not known to have human carcinogenic potential and does not appear to be a mutagen (RED document, page 3, 3rd paragraph).

“Silver is not toxic to humans and is not known to cause cancer, reproductive or neurological damage, or other chronic adverse effects”.

8. There are three classes of Silver-containing liquids:

Silver Nitrate or Silver Chloride (might cause Argyria if extensively and absurdly overdosed)-should be used externally only
Ionic Silver (might cause Argyria if extensively and absurdly overdosed)-should be used externally only.
When ionic silver (silver oxide) is consumed, it undergoes a chemical reaction with stomach acid and turns into silver chloride. Silver chloride is photosensitive and turns from white to black on exposure to light. Silver chloride will react chemically with sulphur or selenium compounds in the body which becomes silver sulphide or silver selenides, which are both insoluble compounds.
Metallic Colloidal Silver./as described on those pages/(true colloidal silver) has very low reactivity with stomach acid.

9. Elimination of Colloidal Silver from the body:
“Several studies support the observation that silver is carried in the blood mainly by the globulins and is quickly cleared by the liver, and to a lesser extent by the spleen (Scott and Hamilton, 1950; Furchner et al.)”. “Radioactive 110AG, as silver iodide, was cleared from the blood of a dog and from the blood of rats, in 24 hours (Anghileri, 1969).

10. Absorption
Colloidal silver water, or NanoSilver water, is rapidly absorbed through the mouth if you let it linger there. It has minimal effects on good bacteria of the colon because it is rapidly absorbed into the small intestine and very little arrives in the large intestine or colon. There have been no reports of digestive side-effects; however, you could take acidophyllus, probiotics or yogurt. Some use colloidal silver water in colonic irrigation for lower bowel problems.
